Day 147 (November 17)

We woke to rain this morning and decided to zero in Franklin, NC. The rain ended in the afternoon, and it got cold. The windchill is expected to be below zero tomorrow. We will hike about 16 miles to keep to our projected finishing date on Saturday. I spent the day napping, writing, and mailing gear home. I will be a few pounds lighter in pack weight tomorrow, especially since I will be wearing most of my clothes. Take care.

Rounding the final turn into Georgia!! I thought those last few days in the high mountains might be rougher. You made it sound easy. Prayers for good weather after tomorrow and to the end!! Take care.

About Sodak

I have attempted and successfully completed many physical challenges over the years, including marathons, cross country bicycle trips, and hundred mile plus hikes. My interest has evolved into a desire to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail (AT), a 2,100-mile trek over rough terrain along 14 eastern states.

I plan to document the experience and its effects on me and others, exploring how the experience of thru-hiking -- i.e. continuously hiking to complete a trail in a single season -- creates opportunities for self-discovery and learning. The field notes will ultimately form the data for a qualitative study and dissertation for a doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of St. Thomas.
